Q: What do you think of gift cards as a Christmas gift?
Do you think it takes away from the thought of giving a gift to the special people (mainly family) in your life? This year, it seems anyways, I have been hearing and seeing quite a bit of commercials for store gift cards as Christmas gifts to 'save time, hassle and/or money' of regular shopping. Just wondering what others thinks of gift cards as a Christmas gift.

A: I think they're rather impersonal and unoriginal. Plus as someone else said, you have to watch out for all the strings attached and fees, etc. But yes they are very practical, esp. if you don't know what to get someone. If it's for a friend, I'd go with a small gift (like an ornament with the year, or a hobby they like) and attach the gift card (in an envelope) to the small gift. So they still have something to open.

Q: Gift cards for Christmas gifts for teachers?
I decided I am going to give my sons preschool teachers gift cards for Christmas. The only problem is how much should they be worth? What is a good amount to put on the gift card?

A: It depends on how much you and your son like his teacher i guess. haha. I'd say about 20 or 25 dollars. :]

Q: What percentage of Christmas gift cards go unused?

A: I saw this on the news yesterday (don't remember which station). There were about $25 Billion in cards bought last year and about $5 Billion not used. So, about 20%.

Q: Restaurant gift cards as Christmas gifts?
I wrote this to tell people the do's and don't's of buying restaurant gift cards for Christmas presents - did I include everything? http://www.helium.com/tm/749697/outback-steakhouse-vegan-someone Please leave me some feedback - I'll give 10 points for the best answer by tomorrow! Thanks so much!

A: In addition to the point about ensuring the card will cover the full cost, I'd also suggest a caution to choose an environment/atmosphere that the recipient will be comfortable in. Dinner and wine at a finer restaurant, even if prepaid, may not make for an enjoyable evening if Joe Recipient hates to gets dressed up and would prefer a casual dining place where he can wear jeans and drink beer out of the bottle. Make sure people are able to stay in their comfort zones. Also, many restaurants won't let the card be used for tips, so find out and plan accordingly so that the recipients aren't surprised to realize they have $10 left at the end of the meal but can't use it on the tip and have to use their own cash. I've had that happen and it was horrible because I didn't bring cash, and couldn't use my credit card just to charge a tip. Ended up having to order a take out plate so I could add the tip to the total.

Q: Can I buy gift cards online for Christmas gifts?
I have relatives in California I want to send gift cards to (like for Target), but I was wondering if I can do the whole process online? It would really help since I'm sick right now and we have a snow storm..... Thanks

A: most sites let you order gift cards online and then they will either mail it to you, mail it to the recipient with a personalized note attached, or they'll send them an electronic gift card with a code they can enter when they use it to make an online puchase. i did the same thing this year! :)

Q: Gift Cards - Christmas gift scourge for the lazy , or Savior for the desperate but well-intentioned shopper?
They save me every year, and for every recipient. I guess you could say that all of the gifts i purchase this year will fit in a slim wallet. LOL If it wasn't for gift cards, I probably would have converted to a jahova's witness or something, and told everyone no more presents. LOL

A: Last year I received three gifts cards. That meant someone selected that card while thinking of me. I loved the cards and used them. One was to shop I had never been to and now I love going there. A gift is a gift is a gift. It shows you care.

Q: Are gift cards the best christmas gift for children?
I have three 4 year olds to get gifts for but I just dont have the time to shop for them.. Do you think it will be a great gift? Now their moms have to go out and shop for what they like though?

A: I don't know what the parents of these 4 yr olds are like but all I know is when I was a kid, and I got a gift card for somewhere for X-mas or my B-day, my parents would use it to buy stupid stuff for themselves and I'd end up with nothing. So... think twice about this idea.

Q: Christmas Gift?
I received a Christmas gift. It was nicely gift wrapped from the store. It was given to me by a female friend. It had no gift card and no Christmas card. The price tag showed too. What are your thoughts about this one? No gift card. No Christmas card. The price tag showed. What are your thoughts? Is my friend a retard or she really didn't want to buy the gift?

A: It sounds like it was carelessly wrapped and that the tag was accidentally left on. Your friend more than likely forgot to include a card with the gift. Maybe your friend was busy and thought to give you a gift, but forgot the card and the store employee who wrapped the gift neglected to remove the store tag.

Q: Is it polite to ask for Visa Gift Cards for Christmas - if it's what we need?
I know that Christmas is 7 months away, but I am looking into buying a dive trip for my scuba-enthusiast husband. Would it be terribly rude to ask our parents to get Visa Gift Cards for us for Christmas instead of a regular gift? The Gift Cards would be extremely helpful with offsetting the cost of the trip. What do you think?

A: Depends on how much money they usually spend on your gifts. if the cost outways the usual amount I think it would be rude to expect them to do so.

Q: Has anyone heard anything about why you shouldn't give gift cards for Christmas this year?
My husband's aunt told me she was going to give us clothes instead of gift cards this year because she had heard somewhere that that's not a good idea to do this year. I just wanted to know why because I planned on giving one to my husband this year for Christmas.

A: your best bet is to probably buy one of those visa or mastercard gift cards they have out now. they can be used anywhere. thats what i always buy for my boyfriends parents and they love it

Q: How many of you received gift cards for your christmas gift and how many of you broke the bank for others?

A: I got two gift cards to Old Navy.. I didn't spend to much on Christmas this year.

Q: I need christmas gift ideas for 20 people in my office, but gift cards seem so generic. Ideas?
The limit for each gift is $20. I probably will be getting Starbucks and Jamba Juice gift cards as well, but I can't find any gift baskets that are $20 or less. ok, so the whole baking for them all is a great idea, but I don't actually know these people. It's for a company sponsored holiday incentive bonus, so they are from different departments of the same company.

A: You might like to make a $20 donation to a food bank or some other charity in their name. Give them the receipt for taxation purposes with a photo of the recipient or a related subject inside a fancy envelope.

Q: How do you get the family to let you buy Christmas gifts, not gift cards. It takes our joy away, not to shop.?

A: I'm not so sure that it does take the joy away to not shop, but in my book it shows you don't really care very much for those close to you if you go straight for gift cards. They should be a last resort for the folks you really care about, even if they have them on their Christmas list. After all, you're saying "I don't want to take the time to get you something you may like so go out and get it yourself. Even worse, what do you do when someone gives you a gift card to a specific place? Their saying right there that you've got to shop where THEY want you to shop whether you want to shop there or not! If you don't want to get gift cards for your family, then don't. Tell them you actually care enough for them to pay attention to them and try to learn what they might like. And that just handing out gift cards shows you could care less for them.

Q: "christmas bonuses gift cards instead of cash?
I am an employer. I have 110 employees. this year I spent 20,000.00 on christmas for the employees. 7000.00 on a party and spent 13000.00 on gift cards to wal-mart with cards given from 25.00 to 250.00 per employee depending on thier tenure. I beleive they expect more since years past I have given what I could. Is this a bad gift to give employees at Christmas time?

A: I think your gift(s) are generous. Many employers give nothing. Gifts more than $25.00 are taxable to employee anyway and that certainly wouldnt make them happy. Gift cards are fine, they can always give them away if they cant use them. That's a great gift. You're a great boss!

Q: Christmas Gift cards....Do you give gift cards more now than shopping for a gift?
To me gift cards are lame, it is so impersonal.

A: It's not lame or impersonal if you know the person LOVES to shop at that particular store or eat at that resutaurant! I love to get gift cards.....as long as they are somewhere I actually like to go. And, to get that out of me, all one has to do is ask. I like gifts, too, but I prefer gift cards so I can pick what I want. I like to shop, and I like to go out to eat. However, I have gotten 2 gift cards for Starbuck's in the past year and they just sit in my purse. I hate those two! I NEVER go to Starbuck's. My advice on gift cards is to make sure someone likes to shop or eat there if you are going to get those. Also, I like to accompany any gift card I give with another small gift of some sort, something thoughtful. My mom loves Target so for Mother's Day I got her a Target gift card attached to a box of those Choxie chocolates they have. I don't like just tossing the gift card in a greeting card.
