Q: Christmas Decorating?
In my community that have a christmas decorating contest. I want to decorate our house but want simple and elegant. Do anyone know of any sites or have any suggestions?

A: Every time I think of Christmas, I think of a White Christmas. So, I am creating a Winter Wonderland. Actually, I am doing it at my home this afternoon (and I live in Houston!). Martha Stewart has an EXCELLENT idea on how to create shooting stars http://www.marthastewart.com/portal/site/mslo/menuitem.3a0656639de62ad593598e10d373a0a0/?vgnextoid=c41cd90a63536110VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&rsc=also_try_p9 If the link doesn't work, just search "shooting stars Martha Stewart". These are so elegant and easy to make. I couldn't find the star shaped wire things so I am creating mine with copper wire myself. Other people recommend bamboo stakes. I also glued silver snowflake tree ornaments to bamboo stakes that I painted black and put one white light behind each of them. This creates the effect of falling snow in my yard. I am then putting white lights on the grass to create a snow covered lawn. With all the white snowflakes and shooting stars, it is very elegant.

Q: How to win my annual Christmas Decorating Contest?
Any suggestions on how to win my Community Christmas Decorating Contest? We try every year and always lose to the people who just throw anything in their yard. Im looking for something that will stand out. My yard consist of one medium sized tree, about 8 yards from the tree to my porch, in front of the porch are 4 medium pine trees. Im not good with the decorating thing, but we do have icicles, the tree lighted up, a wreath above the garage (Pre light), a wreath in the door(pre lit), and more stuff.

A: Here in K.C., there is a house that is a "must" on any tour of Christmas lights. The man who owns the house has his entire home decorated with animatronics.. On his roof, there is a brightly painted Christmas village, sparsely lit. He does not rely on store bought Christmas lights to make his love for the holiday known. His garage is a fully mechanized "Santa's Workshop" that is opened up for the public to view. His windows are filled every year with automated displays of varied and sundry holiday lore from Christmas Trains to The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. This year he added a group of animated penguins in one window, and a life sized Santa placing a present under a tree in a display box he added to the front of his house. He also leaves his front door open for people to see inside his living room, which is another holiday showcase. Dolls of angels and elves set playing with toys from years gone by. Connected to the side of his home is a display in rememberance of the birth of Christ. It is an old, but complete, plastic Manger Scene Yard Lamps. He has been building his display over the course of decades of hard work. In recent years, people have begun throwing money into the garage to help him create more wonder for the children who come faithfully each year to see his home. His neighbors don't even bother to decorate their homes anymore... If you really want to win this competition, try love, devotion, hard work and seeing the holiday through the eyes of a child. -SD-

Q: What are some good Christmas decorating ideas?
I am decorating a store in the mall for Christmas and I want to make all the decorations myself...but I've got no ideas....help?

Q: I want to go natural for my christmas decorating this year. Any tips?
I wanted to go natural this christmas. I have never had a real tree or real christmas garland... I know to just keep some water in the bottom for the tree but what about the garland. Is it going to dry out before christmas gets hear or Do I just spray water it like a plant or something.. Any tips or natural decorating ideas would really be helpfull. Thanks...

A: Trees/ garlands are alive and need water. Spraying the garland will not keep it alive, BUT many european evergreens/conifers.. particulary in winter can go without water for quite a while -weeks even months if they are kept cold and not exposed to warmth. You may however need to treat this year as a fact finding mission to se how ling things will last etc, so you know for next year. Christmas decorating.. depends on what the local season is. Keep an eye out for Cedar trees, toward the end of summer they will have what looks like big fat sausages on them which are seed cones. These will dry adn break up into woody rosettes these are quite attractive and look just like a flower, they are woody and will leterally last a life time. Put the rostettes under or on the tree, or cut a thin strip of material or get some satin ribbon(green/ red or tartan look good) and glue to the back to form a loop for hanging with some of the ribbon dangling down below the rossette. I like them natural but some people paint them gold or silver etc. You can glue them to the end of a bit of wire (ie cut up some pesky wire coat hangers from the dry cleaners) and paint the wire green. they look quite interesting in a vase particulary if its winter and its harder to get flowers. Most ornamental conifers have small (usually round) woody cones from marble to golf ball size. These are made up of wooden discs with a stem coming from the core 9 abit like a ball made out of open umbrellas), whgen they dry the discs separate a bit an look nice stemwooden mushroom or something. thye are cute and look nice used as decorations either natural, painted or with a ribbon to hang them. Christmasy decoration which can act as an air freshner is a few cinnamon sticks tied together with festive ribbon. Home made pot pourri using dried rose petals, lavender (or anything else you want to dry) and to be adventurous you can scent it by using christmas culinary herbs such as nutmeg and cinnamon. Home made baubles are interestin and fun to paint. Get a raw egg, prick the top and bottom of a raw egg with a small skewer to amke a small hole in each end. Insert very long thing needle or skewer ionto eggs to puncture yolk and break the chalaza (strings theat hold yold in place). Blow on one end of the egg and the contents will come out, let the egg shell dry for al ittle while then decorate it. Paint/stickers/ribbon etc (can be fun) and yo can personalise them with names. Have to go but hope that is at least a start toward having a natural christmas.

Q: i need some christmas decorating tips, help?
i want to decorate my room, i already have lights and im putting a small christmas tree, but i wanna make it really cute this year! any ideas?

A: What you have so far sounds good. How about a wreath outside your door for starters. And then maybe frame some pictures on your wall with red a green frames. One year, I sprayed my windows white to give the "snow feel" also, place stickers and ribbons on your desks and chairs and even pillows. Another cute idea is bells. You could hang them different places around your room. You can also use those door knob decorations: santa, rudolph.... and lastly garland makes a huge difference in ur room as well. Heres a site with pretty good decorations:

Q: Christmas Decorating Ideas for a college dorm?
Me and my roommates want to decorate out room for Christmas but are unsure of what to do. What are some creative ideas? We are up for any suggestions. What are some fun festive ideas to make our dorm more Christmas friendly?

A: A small christmas tree, a bow on the door, and make a bunch of snowflakes. (it seems childish, but it gets the spirit going.)

Q: What are some Christmas decorating ideas that can be done by the mentally ill?
I teach classes at a psychiatric hospital, and my class is entered into 2 decorating contests, one for the door and one for the entire room. Any ideas? These are adults, so nothing to childish, but some of them are slightly dangerous, so nothing that can be used to choke, stab, hit etc.

A: I would suggest making a paper quilt. Give everyone a square piece of paper for them to decorate however they want and then have someone up them together like a quilt. You can make some sort of theme and put them in chronological order if you wish.

Q: has the new 'green' society made any impact on your christmas decorating traditions?
are christmas trees going to become a thing of the past? or are we going to use smaller ones like a "charlie 'green' tree" (formerly the charlie brown tree lol)? or artificial? Or is the whole concept of decorations so completely against the efficiency preservation that people are going to just stop decorating? Or have financial issues prevented you from decorating as you normally would?

A: Nope , i never send xmas cards anyway , i see most of the people who are important to me * erm * unless they live in the states!!! dayna!!! we dont do a xmas tree here at home as were always interstate and i use bags instead of wrapping paper so we use them again... and i recycle all beverage bottles/cans and there is and will be a few this yr ... lol breastfeeding freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Q: What year was Christmas introduced to America & What year did Americans start decorating Christmas trees?
Have you always wondered when did Americans start decorating the Christmas tree for the first time and when did Christmas become a national holiday in America? This question was posted March 20th,2008

A: It was in America from the beginning. It's much older than America. It comes from the germans. They had a pagan feast (Turning of the sun). They used burning trees as wheels roling down from mountains. The catholic church interpreted the son of God as the true sun.

Q: What are some creative and low cost Christmas decorating ideas?
What are some creative and low cost decorating ideas for inside and out side of the house? ( keep in mind we have cats and dogs inside )

A: I made my own Christmas ornaments from dough. I used the recipe from http://www.planetshoup.com/easy/holiday/xmasdough2.shtml I got some cookie cutters from the dollar store that were not open topped but had a top that made an all over design on the dough. (don't forget to make a hole for hanging) After baking the dough (looks like porcelain when its done) I painted them with dollar store craft paint and dipped them in a clear coat of varnish and hung them to dry. They turned out really nicely and were cheap to make . . .

Q: Is anyone out there a Christmas decorating expertise?
I need to put up Christmas lights and garland around a wooden mantle. What's the easiest and best way to do it? I would be very grateful for any advise!

A: I'm sure you don't want to pound nails. How about laying garland and lights across the top of the mantel? You could intertwine the lights into the garland. If other decorations are going to be used you could do one in front, one in back across the mantle. Doing the front and back like this would keep garland and lights in place so they don't fall off. Could use three decorations across. One at each end, and one in the middle. This would give the S-type effect and would also keep garland and lights from sliding off the front. Three is a good number, because you always want to work with odd numbers It could be possible in the center to pull the garland and lights down into a swag. Well, these are my suggestions. All I can come up with, but I can picture it looking really nice. Good Luck and Have a Good Christmas

Q: CAN CHRiSTMAS DECORATiNG CAUSE BiRTH DEFENSE?
when decorating for the holidays, do christmas lights cause birth defense? my moms pregnant and my dads questioning. anyy answers?

A: No. I was pregnant during christmas with both of my pregnancy. My oldest was born with a birth defect and that was I was born with and it in my genes. And my second was fine but born with mild hearing loss from his dad side. Everything is fine and it won't hurt the baby at all. Nothing would cause the baby anything.

Q: Should our nativity scene be part of Christmas decorating, or should I put this in a seperate part of the room?
We have a sideboard that I am finally getting around to decorating. Should I include our family nativity scene with the other decorations on it, or should this be on a seperate piece of furniture on its“ own?

A: When I was growing up, my mother used to put the nativity scene on top of the TV (it was a console TV, for those who remember them), so I guess you could say it had it's own space. Personally, I think you should put the nativity in a place where the other decorations won't be "competing" with it. That way, if one wanted to reflect on the story of Christmas, the other decoratiosn aren't catching your eye and drawing you away from it.
