Q: Christmas Decorations?
Yes. I know. It's July. You'll understand in a minute. This will be my husband and my first Christmas truly on our own. We were together last Christmas, but we spent most of the holiday season at either my family's house or his, so we didn't really decorate or anything. This year, we'll have a 9-month-old, and I will be getting very close to having another baby, so we won't be travelling much. I would like to be able to fully decorate the house without having to aquire all the decorations at once in the middle of the Christmas rush. So, getting around to my question: Can anyone think of a reliable retailer of Christmas decorations and such which operates outside of the Christmas season? I have already looked at ornaments and such from Halmark, as well as gotten some stuff from Department 56.

A: If you want lights and stuff, there are a few vendors that are referenced here: http://www.planetchristmas.com/vendors.htm But if you are looking for home style decorations, Bronners is the best for this time of year.

Q: Need receipe for dough ornaments that contains salt, flour and water only.?
This dough is rolled out and cookie cutters are used for shapes. Can be painted etc. and used for Christmas tree decorations.

A: The one below is from gigglemoose and has worked well for us but I want to tell you about a dough recipe we have switched to and it is so much nicer or different anyways from the salt dough. Cinnamon Dough Buy the cheapest appleasuce and bulk cinnamom you can find. Empty the jar of applesauce into a large ziploc bag and start adding the cinnamom powder, kneading it through the bag. Keep adding the cinnamon until the you get a nice dough of a consistency you can roll out. I roll the dough out on parchment paper and sprinkle it with cinnamon if it should get too sticky. Cut the shapes as you would with salt dough and dry overnight or if you want them dried quicker I put them in the oven at 300 degrees for about 1/2 hour. You will be able to look at them and tell when they are dry. Then decorate. We have some ornaments that are about 5 years old and they smell heavenly every Xmas when I open the decoration box. Salt Dough Ingredients 4 cups flour 1 cup salt 1-1/2 cups hot water (from tap) 2 teaspoons vegetable oil (optional) Mix the salt and flour together, then gradually add the water until the dough becomes elastic. (Some recipes call for 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil at this point.) If your mixture turns out too sticky, simply add more flour. If it turns out too crumbly, simply add more water. Knead the dough until it’s a good consistency—then get out rolling pins, cups, bowls, straws, cookie cutters, plastic utensils, and let the fun begin! If you want colored dough, mix food coloring, powdered drink mix, or paint into the water before adding it to the dry ingredients. Or you can paint your creations after baking them at 200 degrees. Baking times will vary depending on the size and thickness of the object, but make sure that all of it is hard. If the dough starts to darken before cooking is complete, cover with aluminum foil. Painted keepsakes will need to be sealed on all sides with clear varnish or polyurethane spray. You can store your salt dough in a sealed container in the refrigerator, but usually not more than a couple of days.

Q: What are some of the Christmas traditions in Greenland?
My 4th grader is working on his Country Report for Greenland. I have only been able to find a small amount of information on this topic. Can anyone answer any of the following questions related to Christmas traditions in Greenland? Is the Chrismas gift giver called Santa Clause in Greenland? If not, what is he called and what does he look like? Do Greenlanders celebrate Christmas (exchange gifts) on Christmas Day, December 25th? If not, what is the date they exchange gifts and what is the day called? What are some decorations for homes and trees beside imported christmas trees decorated with candles and bright ornaments and a shining star? Does anyone have a traditional Christmas recipe from Greenland? We only found traditional Christmas foods as Mattak and Kiviak. Neither of which we have the ingredients or desire to make.

A: Try here: http://www.santas.net/greenlandchristmas.htm http://www.santa.gl/uk/SantaClaus/

Q: Anyone Know How to Make a Chirstmas Tree?
from recycled materials. I mean an actual tree, not ornaments. We have a Christmas decoration competition at school and my to the book teacher gives my group the worst assignment of all, an entire tree made from recycled materials :( I've been checking google for most of the day now, and still nada.

A: Here's one from trash bags. You could use big cardboard to make a bigger tree. http://okok.essortment.com/christmascraft_raki.htm .

Q: Do you have a tradition for putting up your Christmas tree, or is it just another decoration?
We put on Christmas music, drink eggnog, and all participate in putting the ornaments on. Many of the ornaments have their own stories and we talk about when/where we got them. Do you have a tradition for putting up the tree, or is it just another decoration?

A: When we put up the tree which is the 1st weekend in December, I put the lights on and the kids decorate the tree. We have hot chocolate and Christmas songs playing while the tree is decorated.

A: Isn't it a little out of season for this? From memory: 1) 12 drummers drumming, 11 pipers piping, 10 lords a'leaping, 9 ladies dancing, 8 maids a'milking, 7 swans a'swimming, 6 geese a'laying, FIVE GOLDEN RINGS!!!, 4 calling birds, 3 French hens, 2 turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree. Not bad, eh? 2) Germanic pagans would bring evergreens into their homes at winter solstice as a symbol of life continuing even in death. 3) Dunno. The king? 4) Well, Dec. 25. Duh. But there are 12 days of Christmas; the festival doesn't end until Three Kings Day on Jan. 6. 5) If you're old enough to remember "flocked" trees, just about any color. EverGREEN is traditional, though. 6) The Christmas star. Also, the ability of humankind to transcend the bonds of mortality. 7) See #2: Life even in death; the rebirth of the Sun. 8) Because it stays green all winter and doesn't appear to "die" like deciduous trees do. 9) The Magi. 10) Belthazoar? Something like that? I know it's not Shadrac Meshak and Abednego. (OH, it's Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. I looked it up. BZZT I lose.) 11) Most likely candy canes. But I've seen popcorn strings, gingerbread men, cranberries, even little pretzels and little loaves of bread. I did a cool one one year with oranges, lemons and limes. 12) BZZT! I never saw it. 13) Well, if it was one of those bleak comedies, how about dental picks, chainsaws and enema bags? I don't know. 14) YOU probably like "Home Alone," "Home Alone 2," "Black Christmas," "The Little Drummer Boy," and "The Greatest Story Ever Told." Or maybe I'm totally wrong. 15) As symbols of fertility, red represents menstrual blood and green represents the fecundity of new life. 16) The candles kept catching the tree on fire.

Q: How would you feel if someone you knew liked you gave you a card?
How would you feel if someone you knew liked you gave you a Christmas card and a cute ornament decoration a week before Christmas after school lets out for break?

A: It depends on whether this was a special thing just for you or if it was something she did for all her friends..... either way, she's thinking of you, and that can only be a good thing. ;)

Q: What do you think about putting the christmas tree up now?
I know I sound silly, but my husband and I couldn't afford a full size xmas tree for the first couple of years we were together. He got a much better job and now we have went ahead and bought the tree and all the ornaments. We have a 6.5 mth old and we are excited to celebrate it with him. We are both very attached to christmas memories of our childhood and really enjoy that time of year, so it was quite hard not to have all the decorations and stuff for those couple years. We feel like we are justified in decorating because of this reason. The tree can be seen from outside at night. Will our neighbours think we are crazy? Are we? (Please no answers of "who cares what others think", I know this but would still like to know what others think) I'm not American so I already had Thanksgiving weeks ago! lol

A: My boyfriend put his up a few days ago, him and his parents always do all of their christmas decorations on November 1st. A few years ago my parents and I were doing our outside Christmas lights on Halloween night because it was nicer weather than waiting another month or so, we didn't turn them on until later in the month thought. Anyway, I know a lot of people who put their tree up the beginning of November, and since you haven't been able to have one for a few years why not enjoy it longer? Plus you have a young child who is celebrating his first Christmas, I'm sure your neighbors will understand that with the holiday season time becomes very busy so why not put it up before your busy with holiday shopping, family get togethers etc.? I'm sorry this is so long.. :) Have a very Merry Christmas!

Q: Do you think I am a mean mother because I took Christmas away from my kids?
My children do not know how to behave. A few years ago the Easter Bunny didn't come because they were not behaving, and that same year I didn't give them a birthday party for the same reason. This year, after putting my tree up, they knocked it down, took all the ornaments off it, and ruined many of my christmas decorations. So I put it all away and told them they would not be getting Christmas this year. If other family members give them gifts, that is fine. But they will not be getting anything from my husband and I. Do you think that I am being mean? Or that I am expecting to much from my children? I am just wondering what others think. My kids are old enough to know better. I have told them they could get Christmas back, if they behave until then. But they are not. I do not spank my children, but they do get timeouts. I have thought about doing stockings still, but am kind of on the fence about even that. Easter is more of a religous holiday in our family and baskets are not that important to my children. I didn't take away their birthday, just the big party they would have had (they are a year apart so it is celebrated together)

A: I agree. Your kids behave like brats and need to learn to behave. The media makes us think that disciplining our kids is bad and that we shouldn't spank our kids or be "mean" to them. Children need discipline! "Spare the rod spoil the child." They will grow up to be crooked and bad if you don't teach them now. I think what your doing is a good thing for them and they'll thank you later when they grow up to be respectable, lovely adults. Also, when I say "our kids" I'm referring to our 'nations children', as apposed to me saying that I have kids. I don't have kids. I'm 15. I agree with JamKal. It makes no sense that I do but it's a very complicated subject. o.o

Q: Do Jewish people decorate their homes for Hanukkah?
I like to make holiday decorations for friends, but have no idea if that would be appropriate for Hanukkah. (I know Christmas ornaments and red and green decor are not suitable, but don't know what would be.) Thank you.

A: Ya, a little, not like Christmas. The candles are so pretty by themselves. If you do want to do decorations, I'd suggest a blue & white theme. Maybe colors that go with that. Menorahs, latkas, dreidels, hanukah gelt (small chocolate coins), oil lantern, all will work. My very first housemate after college asked me to join her in making Christmas ornaments (for myself) out of dough with a hook. So I made Hanukah themed ones in related shapes. You could tell she wasn't very pleased. It made me sad. Other people & friends I've been able to share with, with joy.

Q: Does anybody know a good site for creative do-it-yourself ideas for Christmas?
It could be for presents, or ornaments or decorations. I just don't want to spend so much money. Thank you very much! Especially something what I can do with my kids! Or if you know have any good tips yourself, please tell me!

A: Good Housekeeping or Better Homes and Gardens :) Good luck and Happy Holidays

Q: Christmas gift-giving for "strangers"?
My son (who is 7 months old) recently started in a new daycare center. I am a very crafty person, and I like to make little Christmas ornaments for the people who make our lives a little easier... the mailman, the nurses in our doctor's office, co-workers with whom I'm not extremely well-acquainted (those co-workers who are "friends" get more than just a Christmas ornament), etc. I would like to do the same for the women who provide such excellent care for my son while my husband and I are earning a living. The problem? We don't know them very well, and we aren't sure of their religious preferences or if they even celebrate Christmas. Is it appropriate to give them a "Christmas" ornament? Nothing religious... something like a handmade candy cane or snowman... to either hang on a tree or use as decoration. Is that appropriate? What about you non-Christians out there... would something like that offend you? I really don't want to offend anyone. What would you do?

A: I feel that snowmen are appropriate gifts, possibly filled with an assortment of nuts, trail mix or small candies. The snowmen represent winter to me, not necessarily Christmas. I would think that most people appreciate the fact that you are thoughtful enough to recognize them. If you have the time to get things ready for the holidays why not do it, they will be here before we know it. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Q: C.h.r.i.s.t.m.a.s. q.u.e.s.t.i.o.n-How is Christmas commercialized and what do people mean when they say that?
I wanna know how is Christmas commercialized and what do people mean when that Christmas is commercialized, I have always wondered about what people mean when they say that. I LOVE Christmas trees they give me a warm feeling and remind me of how blessed I am to be alive, I love helping decorate the tree every year after Thanksgiving, I love walking through malls seeing the beautifully decorated trees on display and I love the music they play while you shop, I also make my own Christmas ornaments, I color them with colored pencils, glitter glue and I hang them up in my room, I also wrap empty boxes with wrapping paper, you know like the box ice cream bars come in, instead of throwing it away, that is my way of recycleing it, by wrapping it in beautiful wrappin paper and putting each box outside my room door on each side of my door, I plan to make 100 more decorations before the day after Thanksging gets here, you should see my room, you will say WOW!!!!!!!!!! Merry Christmas.

A: It means that the stores are pushing you to buy things more at this time of the year. It seems like the sales push starts earlier and earlier. The true meaning of the birth of Christ is forgotten so that people could make more money. The decorations, music, etc are nice, but many people don't get to enjoy it because they are spending a lot of money to try and out do the next guy.
